What are the Social Sciences?
Social Sciences at Waitara High school are about preparing our students to be informed, active and responsible citizens.
It is important that students develop their knowledge of local, national and global geography and history so that they have
a greater understanding of the world they come into contact with. We are keen to promote an interest in current events and
issues, and provide a wide range of settings for students to learn about our world. We encourage our students to ask
questions, empathise with different viewpoints and perspectives so they can understand and be tolerant of others.
We are enthusiastic about the Social Sciences as it provides students with the skills to explain their opinions confidently
and make decisions about their life with surety and understanding. The department aims to develop the skills and
understanding needed to equip young people to play an active, well-informed role in their community, and prepare them for
further education in the world of work in a diverse range of fields.
